The foundations of American moviemaking are laid by European Jewish Emigres who build an industry in their own cultural image. As the world goes to war in the 1930s, Hollywood struggles to respond.

Drawing on old showbiz traditions while inventing new ones, a generation of Jewish-American comedians re-shape the trajectory of mainstream humour.

Focus on the Coen Brothers

In films like Barton Fink, A Serious Man, and Hail, Caesar! Joel and Ethan Coen pose questions of Jewish ideology and identity and how they intersect with popular culture. This lecture will tie the films together through an examination of their ethnic self-presentation. 


Films that may be referred to in the series include Life of Emile Zola, The Great Dictator, The Producers, Annie Hall, Funny Girl and various Coen Brothers Film such as A Serious Man, Barton Fink, Hail, Caesar! and Llewyn Davis


Adam Nayman is a critic, lecturer and author based in Toronto. He writes on film for the Ringer and teaches at the University of Toronto. He has written four books on cinema including The Coen Brothers: This Book Really Ties the Films Together and the recently published Paul Thomas Anderson Masterworks.
