Film: Footprints/Lábnyomok – In Commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day
A discussion with Rabbi Dolgin, filmmaker Laurence Siegel and choreographer Phyllis Whyte
Wednesday, January 27 at 7.00 p.m.

Join us as we screen the contemporary dance film, Footprints/Lábnyomok followed by a discussion about the role of the arts in Holocaust remembrance with Rabbi Dolgin, film-maker Laurence Siegel and choreographer Phyllis Whyte. This moving screendance, shot in Budapest at the site of the “Shoes” sculpture on the Danube pays tribute to the nearly half million Hungarian Jews murdered in the Holocaust. In 1944, the Hungarian Arrow-Cross Militia gathered Jews of Budapest to the bank of the Danube and shot them into the river. In 2005, sculptor Gyula Pauer honoured those lives by creating 60 pairs of iron shoes along the Danube’s embankment.

Laurence Siegel’s arts career over the past 40 years has included independent television production, arts management and teaching. Phyllis Whyte has been a professional dancer with Toronto Dance Theatre, a choreographer, educator and film maker for over 4 decades. Together, they been producing contemporary dance on film since 2007 both in documentary and narrative form.

Laurence grew up at Temple Sinai and his father was the founding president of our Brotherhood.
