Health Policy and Exclusion of Ill Children and Staff
Exclusion criteria for staff and children: unusual behaviour, runny nose, cough, difficulty breathing, vomiting, diarrhea, change in skin colour, rash and fever.
They will be excluded if:• Illness prevents child from participating in activities• The need for care is too great for the staff which would compromise health and safety.• The illness poses a serious health risk if it spreads to others, circumstances under which separation of the affected child or staff is necessary.
Children needing to be isolated will be kept in the principal’s office until they can be picked up.
Reportable diseases or outbreaks will be phoned in to the Communicable Diseases Surveillance Unit at 416.392.7411.
All children must have a completed Medical form handed in before they may attend school.
Please do not bring your child to school if your child is not well enough to participate in indoor and outdoor play.
Children may return to school after being symptom free for 24 hours after having a temperature, diarrhea, vomiting or a bad cold.
Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)A child must be on treatment for 24 hours before they may return to school. The eyes must be clear and discharge free.
Coxsackie A16 (Hand, foot and mouth)Cold sores that appear in the mouth, on the feet or on the hands must be completely dried before the child may return to school.
Fifth DiseaseChild may return to school if child feels well enough to participate in activities. Please inform office if your child has Fifth Disease as it poses a risk to pregnant women and immune comprises children and adults.
Chicken PoxA child may return to school when all spots are dried up. The child must be checked by a staff member before they re-enter the class.
LiceParents will be called and asked to pick up their child if he/she is found to have nit eggs. The child may return to class once they are treated and checked by a staff member to ensure that all eggs are gone.
Scarlet fever (strep)Child must be on antibiotics for 24 hours before he/she returns to school.
Please inform the office as soon as possible if your child contracts any of the above.
A letter will be sent out informing parents if their child has come in contact with any contagious disease.
We reserve the right to refuse admittance to a child if we perceive that the child may infect others, even if a doctor’s note allows admittance.
We are required, by law, to report communicable diseases to Toronto Public Health.
